The Whitney Biennial 2026, now partially closed, had had a phenomenal run this year. The show foregrounds queer art not merely as representation, but as a radical critique of technology, surveillance, and body politics. Across the exhibition, LGBTQIA+ artists dismantle corporate technocracy and reclaim space through immersive installations, shimmering sculptures, and performance.
Here are three standout queer artists and installations redefining contemporary art this year:
- Gabriela Ruiz – Homo Machina (Human Machine, a.k.a. Gay Machine) (2026) Ruiz’s wall-mounted, neon-green fiberglass console subverts cold surveillance technology into a retrofuturist feedback loop. Embedded with live cameras and spherical monitors, the work turns the viewer’s gaze back onto itself, reclaiming digital space through a distinctly queer lens.
- Young Joon Kwak – Divine Dance of Soft Revolt (2024) Reimagining the classic disco ball, Kwak’s suspended chandelier features resin lifecasts of trans and queer friends. Mirror-encrusted limbs spiraling in motion turn nightlife culture into an altar of collective memory, trans joy, and physical defiance.
- Zach Blas – CULTUS (2023) Blas takes on Silicon Valley’s techno-religiosity in an immersive installation interrogating AI power structures. Featuring trans artist Cassils as the militant figure Nootropix, CULTUS uses esoteric altarpieces and sacrilegious graphics to pit bodily intimacy against disembodied tech algorithms.
- Precious Okoyomon – Everything wants to kill you and you should be afraid presents a large-scale installation of fifty-five suspended stuffed animals outfitted with taxidermy bird wings. The angel-like forms hang from nooses in reference to the history of racial violence in the United States.
Together, these queer art pieces offer a powerful vision of soft revolt—showing how LGBTQIA+ creatives continue to reshape the future of contemporary art.
