The queer art community celebrates a landmark exhibition in 2026 as Gladstone Gallery presents a transformative exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe’s work from March 5 to April 18, 2026 in New York. The show fulfills a longtime wish of the artist: seeing his iconic photography on a monumental scale.
Proclaimed the enfant terrible of the 70s and 80s contemporary art, Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) remains a revolutionary force who blends classical aesthetics with daring documentation. While he mastered the physical craft of photography during his life, he constantly sought larger formats to amplify the impact of his imagery. As he stated, “To make pictures big is to make them more powerful”.
In collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Gladstone Gallery debuts 16 large-scale, limited-edition photographs. Most works appear in a 60×60 inch format, including the following iconic images:
