Queer Artist Feature: Davey Powell

Queer Art Hub’s Pride Month blog feature is UK Whitley Bay-based textile artist Davey Powell.

Born into the Traveller community, Davey’s early years were spent living on a fairground in the North East of England, surrounded by the rich traditions of Showman culture. Being queer and a Traveller was complex to say the least, but those experiences were intrinsic in shaping his creative voice.

Davey’s colourful textile creations showcase the beauty, tension and resilience that exist at the intersection of culture, identity and belonging. The messages displayed in the lettering in his work symbolise his own story of hope and motivation in his journey as a queer artist.

Queer Art Hub’s Pride Month partnership, Exhibit With Pride, at St Martins Lane London Hotel

As part of its mission to profile queer artists on its platform, Queer Art Hub partnered with St Martins Lane London for a new show, Exhibit With Pride, during Pride Month 2025. The exhibition spotlights four of Davey Powell’s pieces, from quilts to banners: Don’t Be Shy (2024), Hold On Tight (2024), Yeah (2025), and Try Your Luck (2025).

Each work carries a rich narrative of joy, resilience, and self-expression, mirroring Davey’s lived experience.

I hope my works spark joy and excitement, just like a fairground does,” says Davey Powell. “I want viewers to feel inspired to find the strength within to do whatever it is they want to do.”

A heartfelt and visually striking celebration of queer identity, the exhibit transforms the hotel’s lobby spaces into a vibrant gallery. Exhibit With Pride is part of a wider commitment by St Martins Lane London to celebrate and support LGBTQI+ communities – not just during Pride, but year-round. Visitors can explore Powell’s works in the hotel lobby or even purchase a piece to take home.
